My visit to a local job club

This past week I made my first visit to the Launch Pad Job Club - an Austin-based group whose mission is to help people obtain meaningful employment through programs that promote networking, training, and motivation. It was very well organized and seemed like a great opportunity for job-seekers. The spirit had a very similar tone to JoblessJoe - positive, supportive, and helping unemployed members stay focused on using their time productively while searching for a job. LPJC is run by Kathy Lansford-Powell and meets at least once a week.

I recommend checking for similar types of networking groups in your area.

The most interesting information I picked up at the meeting was related to the Workforce Investment Act. The WIA is intended to help people in several ways:

  • Scholarships for school/training
  • Child care assistance while training
  • Gas mileage reimbursements for training
  • Interview attire assistance
  • Job tool assistance

The program is designed for two groups: dislocated workers (people who got laid-off) and economically disadvantaged workers.

The WIA funds are distributed on a state-by-state basis so check your main state employment website for details on eligibility and training providers.

Stay tuned for more details.

Thanks. I was not familiar with the Workforce Investment Act. I will look into what courses are available in my area.
