Unemployed vs Out of work : freelancers

Just want to open a discussion re being out of work as a freelancer, hence having to cope with lack of any coverage (health insurance, unemployment benefits, etc...).
Any thoughts/experience?
I've done freelance work before and I just searched the net for health plans. I found a really good one from HumanaONE but this was years ago. What in particular are you looking for?
